Agents take documents, but IRS won’t say who investigation targets Agents from the Internal Revenue Service searched a downtown Charleston law firm and at least two other businesses last week as part of a criminal investigation, according to the agency. No arrests have been made, and other than confirming the searches took place last Wednesday, the IRS released no further information this week. Witnesses said more than a dozen agents from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division visited the offices of the law firm Kachmarsky & Taylor at 171 Church St., near Cumberland Street, in the Franke Building. At the same time, a spokesperson said, the IRS also searched a business on Red Bank Road in Goose Creek, a residence on State Road in Summerville and an office on Main Street in downtown Columbia. The IRS referred all questions to Assistant U.S. Attorney Rhett DeHart, who declined to comment because all court records in the matter remained sealed. Charleston defense lawyer Andy Savage, who represents David Glenn Taylor, a partner in Kachmarsky & Taylor, said a search warrant was issued at the firm’s office and documents were taken. That “doesn’t mean he is the target of the inquiry,” Savage said Wednesday. The law office has not shut down, Savage said. John Kachmarsky, who is Taylor’s law partner, could not be reached for comment Wednesday. An attempt to contact his attorney late Wednesday afternoon was unsuccessful. Source : charleston.net |
