In line with efforts to boost regional development, the government has selected six special economic zones across the country. The designated regions are Sunchang and Gochang counties in North Jeolla province, Suncheon city in South Jeolla province, Jung-gu district in Daegu, and Namjeju county in Jeju Island. The government plans to make efforts to further develop each region’s unique quality, including Sunchang, in the country’s southwest where the region has long been known for its red pepper paste or gochujang, and Jung-gu for specializing in oriental herb medicine. In addition, the government will ease regulations for developing these special areas including abolishing of a real estate laws that restrict land use. This is in line with the government’s efforts to promote balanced regional development and decentralization as well as to encourage local governments to focus on developing the region’s specific industries. The government is expected to add 11 regions, including Haeundae in southeastern port city of Busan, on its special zones list next month. Source : english.chosun.com |
