Buying in Baja gains favor, but roadblocks remain.

A group of 35 real estate developers wants to make the process of buying a home in Mexico easier for Americans, particularly Orange County residents. But the developers, who had planned an informational expo last week in Irvine, hit a snag that seems to crop up in U.S.-Mexico home transactions: lack of knowledge of legal procedures. It’s a problem that cuts both ways and that everyone — consumers and business professionals — wants to fix because there is interest on both sides of the border in simplifying the process. “Mexico has some difficult laws with regard to foreign home ownership,” e-mailed Bill Ralston, 28, an Irvine resident. “It has gotten easier, but much like driving a car into Mexico, you do so with some skepticism.” Ralston was trying to find information for his father about the first Baja real estate expo in the United States.
